The easiest way to harden playdough is to bake it. You can it in a preheated oven at 200º F for about 30 minutes on a baking sheet. After baking, let it cool down before sealing it with waterproof varnish. Although there are several ways to harden playdough, many factors come into play if you want the right outcome.
Heat the oven to 350 F. Roll out the dough 1/4-inch thick onto a sheet of parchment cut to fit your baking pan. Edgeless pans or those with only one edge are the best. The Spruce. Lightly flour the cardboard patterns and place them, floured-side down, on the rolled-out dough, leaving a 1-inch space between pieces.
2. Pour the salt, flour, and oil into the mixing bowl. Throw all of the ingredients into the same bowl so that you can mix them up. It can help to pre-sift the flour with a whisk, sift, or fork to get break up big chunks. 3. Pour the water into a large mixing bowl, adding 2-3 drops of food coloring if wanted.
In your large mixing bowl, start by mixing: 1 1/2 cups water (warm water feels nice and can help the ingredients blend, but isn't necessary) You can blend this mixture together with just your hands. Stir it, mush it and run it through your fingers until it is as smooth as you can make it, with very few lumps.
Turn on the burner to medium-low heat and cook and stir until the mixture clings together in a ball. It might take 5-10 minutes of cooking and stirring for your homemade clay to fully come together. Turn off the heat and remove the pot from the burner. At this point your homemade air dry clay may still appear quite sticky.
Instructions. Mix the salt and flour in a large bowl. Make a well in the salt/flour mixture and add the water. Knead until smooth and shape into a ball. If you want to color your salt dough, simply mix in a few drops of food coloring while you are kneading it.
Making Clay. In a medium sized pot combine the cornstarch, baking soda, and water. Stir over medium heat. After a couple of minutes, the mixture will begin to thicken. When it looks like smooth, mashed potatoes, remove the pot from the heat. Spoon the ball of dough into a bowl and cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap until it's cool.
